Local Master Climate Protectors Speaking on Meaningful Action

Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will feature three outstanding graduates of its Master Climate Protector (MCP) course at its November Monthly General Meeting.

MCP graduates are certified when they turn their understanding of climate science into action by promoting understanding in the community or promoting real greenhouse gas reductions. SOCAN’S November meeting will be devoted to an evening of inspiration as three MCP graduates who have performed above and beyond expectations discuss what they have been doing.

Flavia Franco, a member of the Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance (SOPA) Community, will discuss her role in Southern Oregon Food Solutions, a spinoff of SOPA’s Project Drawdown programs. Flavia first learned of Project Drawdown when she attended an author talk by Paul Hawken. In his 2017 book Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming. Hawken’s advice was to influence others – whatever that looks like. Flavia, a SOCAN 2021 MCP graduate, is looking forward to how Hawken’s newest book – Regeneration; Ending the climate crisis in one generation – will influence thinking and actions for years to come.

Erin O’Kelley Muck, owner of Ruby Slipper Designs – an award-winning web design agency that helps nonprofits achieve their online goals – is a 2020 MCP graduate. Erin is passionate about working to turn the tide on climate change.

Cynthia Holm, a professional Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) manager and educator for over 30 years, has experiences ranging from chemical manufacturing to military service. Cynthia, a 2021 graduate, currently serves as EHS Manager and Green Team Coordinator at the Providence Medford Medical Center. Cynthia will share her experiences helping Providence confront climate change.

This SOCAN meeting will be held 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, via ZOOM.  Register to receive the link to participate.

SOCAN has offered MCP certification each year since 2017. The 10-week three-hours-a-week course provides participants a science-based understanding of the basics of climate change, its consequences, and what we can do to address the climate crisis. The 2022 session, starts on Wednesday Feb. 9, will be offered via ZOOM and is open for registration

In addition to SOCAN’s regular scholarship offer, this is the first year SOCAN will include the Robert J. Scheelen Memorial Scholarship as a full scholarship. To honor Bob’s lifelong public service, preference will be given to applicants who have an interest in public service in the government arena. See more information here
